Under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), the UC Berkeley SRP recently hosted two professional exchange visitors from Indonesia.  Mr. Sukma Abdillah, Staff, Legal Section, Mining and Energy Office, Banten Province and Ms. Melda Mardalina, Deputy Director, Recovery from Mining, Oil and Gas, Hazardous and Toxic Waste Management and Site Remediation, Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MOEF), came to the U.S. to investigate multidisciplinary programs addressing hazardous waste remediation. The visitors met with Dr. Lisa Alvarez-Cohen, UC Berkeley SRP Assistant Director and Project 4 Leader, to discuss specifics of our program and remediation research in particular.

The meeting was coordinated by Global Ties San Francisco, which aims to connect emerging international “changemakers” to their professional counterparts in the San Francisco Bay Area through short-term professional exchange programs. The goal of these exchanges is to create opportunities for increased cultural understanding and to promote diplomacy, exchange, and stronger relationships between people from other nations and the United States of America.
